Rusty Mandap

Many professional poker players prefer to not have day jobs because it tends to limit the amount of time that they have for their first love.  This is not the case with professional poker player Rusty Mandap.  While he is one of the hottest contenders in the game today he still maintains his daytime position as the Tournament Director at the Hawaiian Garden Casino.  Mandap says that he loves his job too much to let it go as it keeps him abreast of the newest players in the game.  His job does not allow him to play in any of the tournaments or even in the same casino but it does make for some interesting scouting when it comes to the styles and tells of the players that he studies so carefully to give himself the edge later on down the road.  This procedure has served him well in his tournament play.

While Rusty Mandap is not one of the players that springs to mind in the thoughts of poker enthusiasts the world over that does not mean that he is not a bright star in the world.  To curb his need for tournament play Mandap travels to Los Angeles.  In LA he is known as a staunch competitor who has a great command for the game and all the many intricate details that go into it.  One of the big reasons why Mandap remains unknown in the poker world is because he is not a main event player.  He prefers the Omaha game to any of the many poker varieties and he excels at nearly every version that is currently played.  This has limited his exposure to poker fans as the Main Event of the World Series of Poker is limited to Texas Hold ‘Em.  This does not mean that he is not skilled in this type of game, the exact opposite is true but he likes to use Omaha to sharpen his skills.

As for the tournament play Mandap has excelled but not achieved greatness as of yet.  His best finish in a major tournament to date has been second during the 2003 Legends of Poker finale.  There are few that would argue that he will be a major player in the years to come.  His status as a small time player has limited his exposure and thus the information about him.  Once he joins the ranks of the many superstars there will surely be a line waiting to bring about all the information that anyone can dig up.
