Mike Matusow

Poker is known as the gentleman’s game for the certain etiquette that most of the players follow, but Mike Matusow is not one such player.  Early in his career he earned the nickname “The Mouth” for his penchant for constant chatter at the tables.  While many consider him to be a consummate entertainer, others find him to be nothing more than a constant annoyance.  For this he has his fair share of friends and enemies at the poker tables that he graces but it all means very little.  Annoying or not he is a staunch competitor who is known for taking high level risks when the chips are down, a matter that has won him tournaments as well as cost him the gold.   One of the most famous of these high risks maneuvers came at the World Series Of Poker Main Event final table.  On the draw he went all in with a seven deuce and his bluff was called costing him the highest honor that a poker player can earn.

Through out his career he has won some bracelets and taken the top spots in many of the World Series Of Poker events but the main event honor has slipped through his grasp.  Besides the two bracelets he has also placed in the money sixteen times and sixth is his highest main event finish to date.

Mastusow does not consider his losses after making a highly questionable bluff to be mistakes but rather learning experiences.  He takes the knowledge of where he went wrong and uses it the next time around to make certain it does not happen again.  His style of play is considered reckless by most of the biggest names in the book but even Howard “The Professor” Lederer says that Mastusow is an impressive player.

Even after his impressive career thus far Mastusow has a dark spot.  During 2003 Mastusow was befriended by a man who asked him to procure some illegal narcotics.  Mastusow came through with the drugs only to find out the so called friend was an undercover officer with the Las Vegas Police Department.  For this he served six months in prison and was released early 2005.

Despite the problems Mastusow has reached over three million in tournament money and continues to be a huge threat around the tournaments to those who underestimate his reckless play.  Most believe that he will reach the World Series of Poker final table and be victorious in the end when the time is right.
