Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer was born in 1964 in Minot, North Dakota before moving to Lansing, Michigan then again to Florida.  It was a long time before the call of poker would make its way to Raymer and he spent more than ten years as a practicing patent attorney before doing anything with the poker world.  A casino in Connecticut would be the first avenue for his ascent during 1999.  He would spend a lot time playing there before making his first run on the World Series of Poker.  His first money finish would come in 2001 at the Omaha hi lo event that was eventually won by Jesus Ferguson.  This would only strengthen his resolve and he could be seen in the back drop of the 2002 series as the winner celebrated.  He was not about to give up and he continued to move forward, playing wherever he could.

2004 was the year that it all came true.  Raymer won a seat in the World Series of Poker main event while playing at Pokerstars for $160.  This would be the best thing that could have ever happened to the new player as he worked his way to the final table.  The battle was long and fierce as he finally went on to defeat David Williams.  This win earned him five million dollars and the coveted bracelet.  This ascent was very similar to that of champion Chris Moneymaker.  They both went on to win the top spot after winning a seat in the tournament through an online venue instead of paying the ten thousand dollar entry fee.

2005 was not quite as kind to Raymer as he finished twenty fifth out of over five thousand players but he was able to console himself with the more than three hundred thousand in prize money he received for the effort.

Raymer earned the nickname Fossil Man because he is an avid collector of fossils and uses a small fossil as a card protector while playing.  Along with fellow champions Chris Moneymaker and Joseph Hachem, Raymer is a spokesman and frequent player at PokerStars and also appears in Poker Superstars, a televised poker event.

At 42, Raymer is one of the most feared players in the game but is also known to be the most gracious as well as friendly players at the table.  He enjoys spending time with his wife and child and does not perform on the World Poker Tour, but instead prefers to stay close to home and only play in certain tournaments.
