Erik Seidel

Erik Seidel is one who enjoys risks and that much is shown through his impressive tournament play and his former employment.  Born in New York City (there is no birth date listed for him) he began his gambling career as a tournament backgammon player and he continued with this for about eight or so years.  He then turned his attention to the stock market.  He refers to the stock market as the greatest gamble of them all, because there is no way to make any kind of honest guess about the outcome.  He must have done something right because he was able to finance the change from the stock market to the poker world with the money that he earned.  Seidel is a member of the group known as Mayfair Club that includes other great players like Howard Lederer.  They are a loose knit group that exchanges ideas and strategies about the poker tournaments.

1988 saw the first appearance of Erick Seidel as he made a run on the World Series of Poker main event.  This would become the stepping stone to fame for Seidel as he eventually wound up going head to head with Johnny Chan in the main event as the last two players.  The battle was long fought and in the end, Chan was successful but he even admits that it was no easy task to take out the newcomer who seemed to have a better grasp on the game then many of the veteran players that he had faced.  The final hand of the game was featured on the movie Rounders starring Matt Damon, which did much for the careers of not only Seidel but also Chan.

Seidel is the proud owner of seven World Series of Poker bracelets though none of them are for the main event, he plans to change that in the near future.  As of 2005, Seidel has banked thirty-five money finishes in the live tournaments and nine money finishes for the World Poker tour.  He has a combined live tournament total of over five million dollars and that does not include the money that he is currently earning from his endorsements, which there are many.

Seidel is also part of the new online poker community Full Tilt Poker and is assisting as part of the design team as well as an active player there and through PokerStars.  He currently resides in Las Vegas but enjoys travel.
