Pai Gow Poker

When playing Pai Gow Poker, a pack of 53 cards is used, that is a normal deck plus one joker. The joker is used as a limited wild card that can only be used as an Ace or to make a Straight, a Flush or a Straight Flush. In Pai Gow Poker, players do not compete against each other, but against the dealer. Before the start of each game players make their bet. Once bets have been placed, the dealer deals seven cards to each player, face down. After all cards have been dealt, each player will divide their seven cards into two different hands, a two card hand and a five card hand. Remember when making your two hands that all values are the same as in any other game of poker with the exception that the A-2-3-4-5 is the 2nd highest straight possible. The next thing to remember is that you have to make sure that the five card hand is higher in rank than the two card hand. For example, if you had two pair, say a pair of Kings and a pair of 8s, you would need to arrange the pair of 8s as the two card hand and leave the pair of Kings in the five card hand. After each hand has been made, they are placed face down by the player on their labeled areas. Once this has been done, the dealer’s cards are turned over and set into the two hands as the players have done. After the dealer has set his or her two hands, each player turns over his or her hands. The determination of a win or loss is made between each individual player and the dealer by comparing the player’s High Hand (the 5 card hand) with the dealer’s High Hand and then the player’s Low Hand (the 2 card hand) with the dealer’s Low Hand. If both of the player’s hands beat both of the Dealer’s hands, then the dealer pays out even money according to the amount bet by the player. If, however, one of the dealer’s hand wins and one loses, then this is called a “push” and all money is returned. If both of the dealer’s hands beat both of the player’s hands, then the dealer takes the player’s bet. If, for instance, the player’s high hand and the dealer’s hand are tied, the dealer is declared the winner of that hand.
