How to Get Banned from an Online Poker Site

There are a lot of people who act completely different online than they do in real life. When they’re online, they have anonymity, which makes them feel less inhibited. This can encourage them to behave in ways that they would never consider in their daily lives. Online poker sites are often the scene of behavior that you wouldn’t find in a casino or card room.

People who play poker online feel safe from being scrutinized by others. They hide behind their computer screens and username. They feel they can act and speak any way they wish without consequences. However, hiding in anonymity doesn’t excuse anyone from conducting themselves at a socially acceptable level. In fact, if players don’t conduct themselves accordingly, they will be banned from online poker sites without question.

There are a wide variety of ways to get banned from an online poker site. Uttering obscenities and profanities is one. Though most online poker sites block coarse and vulgar language, frustrated players can be very imaginative. They change vowels and consonants in words in order to get their message across. Never do this. It definitely will not impress the management and if other players complain that you are using foul language, you will be warned to stop in no uncertain terms. If you continue, your chat privileges will disappear and the next occurrence will cause you to be suspended from the site, or your account may be permanently terminated.

Abusive comments are uncalled for. If you lose, don’t go berserk and belittle other players or become verbally abusive in any way to the player who beat you. This can completely sour the atmosphere at the online poker table and cause people to leave. This means you will forfeit any chance you had to get your money back.

It’s a lot easier to insult a cute avatar in an online poker game than it is a big bruiser at a real table. However, neither is acceptable. Online poker rooms usually have a zero tolerance for abusive players who cause regulars or visiting clients to leave. This ruins the game for everyone and if complaints pour in about your actions, you’ll find yourself out in the cold.

Online, as in real life, learn to mind your own business (MYOB.) Chatting quietly is perfectly acceptable once you’ve folded. Becoming involved in heckling or razzing is not. This will annoy and frustrate the players who are trying to complete the hand and bring the wrath of the online poker gods down upon you. Sticking your nose in the business of other poker players is not acceptable poker etiquette either online or in a real life game.

Don’t offer up too much information. Talking too much about your hand can get you in hot water. Casino rules state that if you reveal hole cards, they become dead. Online poker sites have no way to enforce such a rule, but if other players complain, site management can review your chat and your hand. If you are deemed a troublemaker, your privileges terminated.

It’s relatively easy for two players to use instant messaging or other means of communication to work against other players in an online poker game. To put it bluntly, this is cheating. If you’re found out, and you will be, your account will be immediately terminated.

Online poker sites require players to report abuse of their system because of the huge number of players online at one time and the many hands that are dealt in a short time frame. Stand up to bullies you meet along the way. Report abusive players to assure others don’t fall victim to their tactics. Follow the rules and conduct yourself in the same manner you would in any other card room or casino. If you do, both you and other players at the table will have a great online poker experience.
