What is a Poker Purist?

The term “poker purist,” is a somewhat difficult term to explain. Most purists have extreme knowledge of poker terms and etiquette. They are respectful to their opponents and follow the rules of the game explicitly.

Poker purists are wary of new players. They scrutinize a player’s skill over the long term and don’t praise them just because they’ve won a few tournaments. They usually prefer playing with quiet players over those who are noisy, mouth and boisterous; annoying personalities driver poker purists crazy. They dislike the attention given to celebrity players while some of the world’s leading players are ignored because they lack exposure to the media.

Poker purists mock players that wear sunglasses while playing and have an intense dislike for those who talk on their cell phones or listen to music. Purists love the game of poker and never want to play with a “wild card.”

Most beginning poker players are exposed to the game through televised poker tournaments. They seem to think that acting like a fool at the table is cool. For some reason, they don’t realize such actions are socially unacceptable. The poker television shows are encouraging such antics and this sends the wrong message to new players.

A professional poker player puts on a “poker face” when playing. No matter whether he wins or loses, his expression is always the same. If he loses, he shakes hands with the victor and wishes him well. That’s definitely a class act that is the sign of an experienced and top-notch poker player.

Poker purists are sticklers for poker etiquette. Though they’re willing to put up with mistakes from beginners, they’re adamant that all rules be followed. They dislike slow rolling, bets being made out of turn, string bets, splashing the pot and discussions about a hand while it is being played. These are things that annoy other players. Though players new to poker may make these mistakes unknowingly, it is infuriating to a poker purist when an experienced player pulls these stunts out of laziness. These types of players are extremely annoying to others because they are not concentrating or paying attention to the game and there behavior is extremely disruptive.

Nothing infuriates poker purists more than players who discuss the hand that’s currently being played. These people will only put up with so much before they speak to the dealer and you will be immediately told to stop. Discussing the hand that is currently being played is against the rules and if you continue after being warned, you can lose your spot in the game.

Another disturbing factor at a poker table is players who make abusive comments to their opponents. Some players have been belittled so badly they’ve had to leave the table. This is definitely not called for. When a player becomes frustrated, he should have the sense to leave the table for a few minutes while he calms himself. Being a good poker player means exhibiting self control at all times.

In poker, treat other players as you’d wish to be treated. Have respect for your opponents, follow the rules and always use proper poker etiquette. If you don’t know poker etiquette, study it before playing. These qualities will take you far when playing any poker game, including online play.
